CLACHAN GLAS HIGHLANDS
est. 1990
HIGHLANDS! the name alone evokes a picture of heather and hills.
But actually we speak of the cattle that bear this name - the majestic beasts, which evolved in the glens of Northern Scotland centuries ago.
Highlands are known for their long shaggy hair and broad set of horns and are easily recognized. Highland cattle have a double hair coat, which protects them from cold and moisture making it unnecessary for them to develop a lot of backfat to keep warm. They require little or no housing, capital outlay for barns in which to house them is minimal or absent altogether. Motherly instinct is excellant, cows produce small calves ( 40-80lbs ) and up to 15 calves over their life span and seldom need assistance giving birth.
We have raised Highlands for some years now on our 90 acre farm in Southern Ontario. We raise them primarily for foundation stock and generally run from 70-100 registered purebred head on the property. Mature cows can weigh from 1100-1400lbs, and bulls can reach a weight of over a ton.
While my roots are in Canada, my wife Chris comes from the Isle of Barra in the Western Isles, Outer Hebrides and speaks gaelic, she is no stranger to Highland cattle.

About Your Breeding Program:
We usually have 20-30 breeding females which form the foundation of the herd, and a number of bred heifers which we offer for sale.We use 2-3 breeding bulls annually and generally keep bulls only 3-4 years. When bull calve numbers allow we run a 140 day bull test for average daily gain (ADG) and overall performance in the group. This test allows us to monitor the animals and offer superior bulls for sale as well as tracking their Dams performance as we also monitor the females on a lesser scale as well. At CLACHAN GLAS we select bloodlines carefully for good mothering instinct, temprement, udders and conformation, all the qualities that give you a good solid animal.
